Lidia Vianu: The book as a gift…

I loved my profession. It was not easy for me to leave teaching. Working with students has made me who I am today. Writing and translation–which is what I do now–are different from teaching.
              Writing has haunted me since very early childhood. It is what made me study English in the first place. Translation followed and added itself to writing, since translation is a kind of rewriting, as a matter of fact.
              I have kept in touch with the MA Programme for the Translation of the Contemporary Literary Text, which I founded. I have also founded the online publishing house Contemporary Literature Press. What I do now is different from teaching. We sort of learn together how to make an online book. A book that becomes a gift…
              The present volume consists of poems by Caroline Carver, translated by two graduate students: Ana Neagu and Raluca Simion. I am publishing it as a Christmas gift… And I will continue to publish young translators, whom I urge to translate Romanian writers. Their interest in working with me is, these days, the most beautiful present life could have given me.

Mi–am iubit mult meseria. M–am desprins greu de cariera universitară. Relația mea cu studenții m–a format. Dar ceea ce scriu și traduc acum reprezintă, de fapt, două alte profesii.
              Din copilărie, am vrut să scriu. Acesta a fost adevăratul motiv pentru care am intrat la Engleză. Traducerea a venit ca o completare a scrisului, pentru că orice traducere este o rescriere, la urma urmei.
              Am păstrat legătura cu programul pe care l–am înființat, Masteratul pentru Traducerea Textului Literar Contemporan. Odată cu MTTLC, am înființat editura online Contemporary Literature Press. Nu mai este vorba de predare acum, ci de lucru cot la cot. Ca să publicăm o carte online. Cartea ca dar…
              Volumul de față cuprinde traducerea unor poeme de Caroline Carver, făcută de două masterande: Ana Neagu și Raluca Simion. Îl public ca dar de Crăciun… Și voi publica în continuare tineri colaboratori, pe care îi încurajez să traducă mai ales scriitori români. Interesul tinerilor care vin către mine în această perioadă a vieții mele mă bucură enorm.
