Navid Nuur: ”When Doubt Turns into Destiny” in Amsterdam

The Oude Kerk presents a large-scale, context-specific exhibition by Navid Nuur that invites you to experience the church sensorially. Nuur peels back the history of Amsterdam’s oldest building, emphasising the here-and-now through experiences about seeing, smelling, hearing, earth, air, and light. Notably, an important part of the exhibition will only conclude one hundred years from now, according to e-flux.

Alchemy and art

Navid Nuur is an artist who seeks meaning through an approach that oscillates between art and alchemy. He uses natural transformation processes of materials, influenced by light, darkness, or cold, to visualise immaterial phenomena—such as the flow of energy or the perception of time. In the Oude Kerk, Nuur’s works explore light, time, and space, visible and invisible phenomena, and physical and chemical principles. New and existing works converge in a moving interplay, encouraging us to take a sharper perspective on the world. A ray of sunlight occasionally reveals a streak in the heavens, an instrument periodically exhales a breath of air, and a field of pebbles crunches.

100 city vases (2125)

During the exhibition, Nuur creates a series of one hundred vases in and around the Oude Kerk. In a workshop, drying room, and grinding room, he mixes clay with raw materials and minerals from Amsterdam, making traces of the city visible in the vases. At the end of the exhibition, the vases will be stored in the Iron Chapel, which served as Amsterdam’s city vault for centuries. A vase will be auctioned each year, bringing When Doubt Turns into Destiny to completion a hundred years from now, in 2125, when all the vases will have left the church.

Playful alchemist

Navid Nuur (Tehran, 1976) lives and works in The Hague. Often described as ‘a playful alchemist,’ he takes an investigative approach that is always rooted in a sense of wonder. His work has been exhibited at prominent venues such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2016); Kunstmuseum Den Haag (2021); Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht (2013); La Biennale di Venezia (2011); among others. His works are part of major collections, including Kunsthaus Zürich; Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; SMAK, Gent. Nuur received many awards for his work, including the Royal Prize for Free Painting (2011) and the Discoveries Prize at Art Basel in Hong Kong (2013).

Public programme
The exhibition’s events programme includes an artist talk, concerts, guided tours, performances, and other activities. More information can be found here. At the weekends, you’ll find guides in the church that are happy to talk about the exhibition.

Forms of the Shadow at Secession

Curated by Sunjung Kim.
Programmed by the board of the Secession, as announced by e-flux platform.

The Vienna Secession is delighted to host the major group exhibition Forms of the Shadow; curated by Sunjung Kim, Artistic Director of the Art Sonje Center in Seoul. The exhibition casts light on contemporary shadows unveiled by the global pandemic, the climate crisis, and geopolitical tensions. Through this thematic lens, it invites viewers to reflect upon the interconnectedness of our world and the complexities of navigating through turbulent times. By shedding light on the ever-shifting nature of shadows and their metaphorical significance in witnessing the passage of time, the exhibition prompts reflection on the intricate layers of human existence.

The works on view in Forms of the Shadow are distributed across three groups. The first features a diverse range of artistic expressions that explore geopolitical tensions, notably focusing on the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Further on, the challenges and connections inherent within wider temporal and intellectual landscapes are examined in works which probe historical and geographical sutures, such as those between East and West, as well as between fin-de-siècle Habsburg and modern-day Vienna.

While this first group of works embodies a melancholic sense of hope for the future, subsequent groupings uncover further tragic or uncomfortable truths about life and death—not just physical death, but social and metaphorical death as well.

Spread across both the Secession and the nearby Korean Cultural Centre, the final group is dedicated to the concept of nature reclaiming areas once disturbed by human intervention—this is especially evident in the DMZ, which has remained inaccessible for over 70 years. Contrasting with the human-dominated spaces elsewhere in the show, this section focuses on the way in which plants and animals have been able to retake territories that have, for a variety of reasons, become uninhabitable by humans.

Forms of the Shadow offers nuanced insights into the resilience of nature amidst human intervention as well as the enduring pursuit of hope among adversity. Sculptures, paintings, embroideries, and performances invite viewers to immerse themselves in a sensory journey that delves deep into the intricate layers of human experience, revealing the perpetual dance between light and shadow that defines our collective travels on this planet.

In collaboration with Art Sonje Center, Seoul.
The exhibition continues at the Korean Cultural Center, Kärnter Straße 43.

Farid Rahimi: AFGHANISTAN  from Centro Itard Lombardia to Berlin

Resulting in a feature film, a two-channel video installation and a publication, AFGHANISTAN is a new project by Farid Rahimi. The work stems from long-term research in which the artist reconnects with people and memories tied to the country of his father’s homeland, Afghanistan. Through a series of journeys, meetings and conversations, Rahimi—born in Switzerland but raised and residing in Italy—reconstructs a geographical and emotional map of this network of contacts, following an itinerary that extends from Italy and Germany to the United States, Australia and Japan. By traversing vast physical, and emotional distances, Rahimi has embarked on a three-month journey around four continents to piece together, to confront and reconstruct, his fragmented identity divided between distant family ties and his sense of belonging to a country he has never visited: Afghanistan. This reflection, originating from a personal need, extends to explore the universal concept of diaspora and the constant renegotiation of personal identity that originates from that.

Among the winners of the twelfth edition of the Italian Council by the Ministry of Culture, AFGHANISTAN is a project produced by Centro Itard Lombardia and curated by Luca Cerizza.

Different incarnations of the project, have already been presented at Ar/Ge Kunst in Bozen and at MAO (Museo di Arte Orientale) in Turin, partners of the project, and at Babylon in Berlin.

The final version of the installation To Afghanistan is now part of the collection of Mufoco, Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea in Milano-Cinisello Balsamo and will be presented in Berlin at The Institute for Endotic Research alongside with a book, published by Archive Books. The book features contributions from Francesca Recchia, independent researcher of Bocconi University in Milan; Zafar Sayan, sociologist and author of an essay on the Afghan diaspora; Mohammad Dawood Tawana, sociologist and researcher; Susanna Ravelli, coordinator of the project; and it is introduced by a conversation between Farid Rahimi and Luca Cerizza, editor of the publication.

The Appointments in Berlin
After the presentations in Bozen and Turin—respectively on May 13 at Ar/Ge Kunst and May 23 at MAO, Museo di Arte Orientale—before being acquired by Mufoco in Milano-Cinisello Balsamo, AFGHANISTAN by Farid Rahimi arrives in Berlin with a double date event.

On August 30, with the collaboration of the European partner Archive Kabinett e.V., the video—which will be part of the final installation—was screened in premiere  vision at Babylon at 6pm, preceded by an introduction featuring the artist and the project’s curator, Luca Cerizza.

On September 19, at 6:30pm, at The Institute for Endotic Research, the book, which delves into the project realized within the framework of the Italian Council 2023, will be presented alongside the film projection.

AFGHANISTAN by Farid Rahimi—Project and work details
The project is curated by Luca Cerizza, produced by Centro Itard Lombardia, and realized with the support of the Italian Council XII edition, under the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity.

“We will tell the story of Afghanistan, without ever truly going there. We will evoke these places through the direct voices of those who have been there, who have lived there, through anecdotes, memories, and dramatic tales of war…”—Farid Rahimi

A podcast documenting the entire project journey has been created, curated by Marco Enrico Giacomelli and Sirio Schiano lo Moriello. The podcast series was previewed on Radio Arte and is available on platforms such as Amazon Music/Audible, Google Podcasts, and Spotify, as well as on the Centro Itard Lombardia website.

Application deadline: January 5, 2025

The call for project proposals for the eleventh edition of the PERSPEKTIVE Fund in the category of visual arts is now open until January 5, 2025.

Initiated in 2014, the PERSPEKTIVE Fund is a collaboration between the Office for Visual Arts of the Institut français Germany and the Goethe Institute. It enables the development of collaborative and transnational artistic initiatives between German and French creative scenes, thus fostering an enrichment of European dialogue. The fund supports institutions and cultural practitioners who implement bi-national collaborative projects, i.e. projects presented in both France and Germany. The projects can include exhibitions as well as conferences, symposia, workshops, and can take different forms in both countries. Participatory formats such as festivals, performances, or art educational projects initiated by cultural practitioners are also invited to apply.

From 2015 to 2024, the first ten editions of the PERSPEKTIVE Fund supported forty-five projects with over 610 partners.

This call for proposals from the PERSPEKTIVE Fund is primarily intended for practitioners working within cultural and artistic structures (museums, art centers, art galleries, art associations, etc.). However, theorists, critics, and independent, established or emerging curators based in France or Germany are also invited to apply. The main criteria is that the projects are collaborative and presented in both countries. Project submissions are reviewed by a jury of experts. The selected projects are to be realized between February and December 2025.

The team at the Office for Visual Arts is available to provide further information regarding the application conditions. We look forward to receiving your applications for the PERSPEKTIVE 2025 fund.
