În ultimii ani, publicul bucureştean a avut ocazia să încerce diferite tipuri de poezie. Poate că este momentul să participe la o manifestare dedicată unui tip special de poezie : poezia conceptuală. Gene Tanta este un poet american născut la Timişoara. Revenit în România ca bursier Fulbright, Tanta organizează în această săptămână (joi-sâmbătă) simpozionul şi masa rotundă „Identitate şi formă în poezia contemporană”. Printre invitaţii săi la Bucureşti se va afla şi Vanesa Place, una din figurile marcante ale poeziei concepuale, cea mai consistentă viziune asupra poeziei ce marchează începutul secolului XXI. Mai rar prezentată în România, poezia conceptuală se concentrează mai ales asupra procesului de elaborare şi concepere propriu zisă a poeziei şi mai puţin asupra produsului final.

Gene Tanta is an American poet born in Timişoara. His conceptual approach to poetry brought him back in Romania as a Fulbright Scholar. He will host “Identity and Form in Contemporary Innovative Poetry: Symposium and Roundtable” which will take place June 13-15, 2013.

“This symposium/roundtable offers participants (and the Romanian poetry-reading public) the opportunity to think through some of our categorical assumptions about form and content and to enjoy the slip of dynamic discourses offered by intelligent contemporaries. In other words, this project will reevaluate the problems with continuing to think within the box about cultural belonging (innovative poetry cliques, nationalism, genre writing of all kinds, etc.). The central question unifying the various presentations and performances comprising the symposium is this: how does cultural biography relate to formal innovation? Such a question matters to poets and readers, to be sure, but it also seems relevant to anyone who may be thinking about the historical subject and the meaning of citizenship today.

On a personal level, I want to catch a glimpse of cutting edge creative practices of the generation of Romanian poets to which I would have belonged had I not emigrated from Romania to the US in 1984. I am documenting this glimpse with the research aspect of my Fulbright grant by editing an anthology called: “Biography After Communism: Romanian Poetry After 1989.”

I am confident bringing together such a group of significant American and Romanian writers and performers will pave the way for new and exciting cross-cultural exchanges. Exposing Romanian vanguard writers and thinkers to cutting-edge American writing practices (and vice versa) will, beyond sharing the pulsebeat (to use Whitman’s word) of each other’s horizons, broaden what seems possible in both conclaves. To define this broadening of cultural horizons more specifically, I envision proactive members of both nations taking advantage of this occasion to establish new American-Romanian poetic translation projects, broach productive collaborative relationships, and bring to bear critical perspective upon one another’s work.

By bringing together some of the most exciting and important American poets with some of the sharpest and most inventive Romanian poets, I intend to foster the sparks of mutual and substantive cultural exchange. Such cultural exchange will foster new ideas about how we approach the different kinds of belonging in our lives. As well, our trans-Atlantic meeting will offer fresh perspectives on the prospect of communicating how we write and who we think we are in the company of those who may be different than ourselves” said Gene Tanta.

Elena Vlădăreanu was born in 1981, in Medgidia (Constanţa). She studied Romanian and French Litterature at the University of Bucharest and Visual Studies at Image Studies Centre in Bucharest (CESI – Centrul de Excelenţă în Studiul Imaginii). She published her first collection in 2002, Pagini (Pages) after an underground collection, din confesiunile distinsei doamne m. (distinguished lady m. confessions). She works as a radio journalists and presents every week a very short contemporary poetry programme for Romanian Cultural Radio, named Poezie şi atât (Poetry and Nothing Else).

Elena Vlădăreanu s-a născut în 1981, la Medgidia (Constanţa). A studiat literatură română şi literatură franceză la Universitatea din Bucureşti şi a urmat Studii Vizuale la CESI – Centrul de Excelenţă în Studiul Imaginii. Primul volum de poezie i-a apărut în 2002, Pagini, după ce scosese o publicaţie underground, din confesiunile distinsei doamne m. A mai publicat: Fisuri (2003), Europa. Zece cântece funerare (2005), Spaţiu privat (2009). A publicat, de asemenea, proză în câteva antologii. Considered a leading practitioner of conceptual writing, Vanessa Place’s work is

available in French (Exposé des Faits), English (Tragodìa, Boycott), Danish (Andersen’s Wank), and German (Die Dichtkunst). Her Notes on Conceptualisms, co-authored with Robert Fitterman, has been translated into Russian, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and German. Place is author of the novel, La Medusa, and a non-fiction book, The Guilt Project: Rape, Morality and Law, based on her work as an attorney representing indigent sex offenders on appeal; she is also co-director of Les Figues Press. As an artist, Place recently had her first solo exhibition at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. As a poet and critic, Place lectures and performs internationally, and was the first poet to perform as part of the Whitney Biennial. A content advisory was posted.

Răzvan Ţupa (born in 1975) is a Romanian poet from Bucharest. He studied History of Religions and Culture and works as a journalist. Between 2005 and 2007 he was in charge with a new poetry magazine, Versus-Verso. Since 2006 he has been Editor en chief for “Cuvantul” magazine but for the end of 2008 he leaves the Romanian cultural press. Since 1996 performs poetry in different places in Bucharest. He read poetry at events in Paris, Rome, Prague, New York, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Budapest and Berlin (2006-2012).

His first collection of poetry was “Fetish” in 2001, awarded ex aequo the “Mihai

Eminescu” National Award for first book of Poetry. He published “Romanian bodies” a second book of poetry, in 2005, and “poetic. the Sky in Delft and other Romanian Bodies” in 2011. His poems were selected for “No Longer Poetry- New Romanian Poetry”, an anthology published in UK(2005) and “The Vanishing Point that Whistles” an anthology of Romanian poetry released in United States (2012) but, also, in “From a Terrace in Prague”, a Czech anthology in English dedicated to the best texts ever written about Prague.

In 2005 he launched a series of weekly literary meetings. The initial Poetics of the quotidian format was changed in 2010 in Atelierelational, aimed to promote a relational aproach to poetry and counted more than 150 public events aimed in promoting contemporary literature. Razvan Ţupa s-a născut în 1975; este un poet român, din Bucureşti. A studiat Istoria Religiilor şi a Culturii şi lucrează ca jurnalist. Între 2005 şi 2007, s-a ocupat de conducerea revistei de poezie Versus-Verso. Din anul 2006, a fost redactor-şef al revistei Cuvântul, dar la sfârşitul lui 2008, părăseşte scena presei culturale româneşti. Începând cu 1996, are lecturi de poezie în diferite locuri din Bucureşti. A avut lecturi la evenimente organizate în Paris, Roma, Praga, New York, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Budapesta şi Berlin (2006-2012).

Primul său volum publicat în 2001, “fetiş”, a fost distins cu Premiul naţional pentru poezie „Mihai Eminescu“, Opera Prima. In 2005, a publicat un al doilea volum “corpuri româneşti”, iar în 2011 a lansat “poetic. cerul din delft şi alte corpuri româneşti”.

Formatul iniţial al acestor întâlniri a fost schimbat în 2010 şi transformat în Atelierelational, al căror scop era să încurajeze interacţiunea poetică şi să organizeze peste 150 de evenimente publice de promovare a literaturii contemporane. Johannes Göransson is the author of five books of poetry – most recently, Haute Surveillance (Tarpaulin Sky Press, 2013) – and the translator of several books of Swedish poetry (most recently Aase Berg’s Dark Matter). He is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame and the publisher of the press Action Books, which publishes a number of American authors as well as many works in translation. Johannes Göransson este autorul a cinci cărţi de poezie – cea mai recentă, Haute Surveillance (apărută la Tarpaulin Sky Press, 2013); dar şi traducătorul a câtorva cărţi de poezie suedeză (cea mai recentă fiind cartea lui Aase Berg, Dark Matter). Radu Vancu (Sibiu, Romania, 1978) is a Romanian poet and translator. He has

published six books of poems and two large essays on Mihai Eminescu and Mircea Ivănescu. Together with Claudiu Komartin, he is the co-editor of the anthologies Best Romanian poems of the year 2010 and 2011. He has translated novels and poetry (Ezra Pound, John Berryman). He works as a lecturer at the University from Sibiu and as an editor of two cultural magazines, Poesis International and Transilvania.

Radu Vancu (Sibiu, România, 1978) este un poet şi traducător român. A publicat şase volume de poezie şi două eseuri extinse despre Mihai Eminescu şi Mircea Ivănescu.

Împreună cu Claudiu Komartin, este co-editor al antologiilor Cele mai frumoase poeme din 2010 şi din 2011. A tradus romane şi poezie (Ezra Pound, John Berryman). Lucrează ca lector la Universitatea din Sibiu şi ca redactor la două reviste culturale, Poesis International şi Transilvania.

 

Jennifer Karmin’s multidisciplinary projects have been presented at festivals, artist-run spaces, and on city streets across the United States, Japan, Kenya, and Europe. A founding curator of the Red Rover Series, she is the author of the text-sound epic Aaaaaaaaaaalice (Flim Forum Press, 2010) and her poetry was recently published in I’ll Drown My Book: Conceptual Writing by Women (Les Figues Press, 2012). Jennifer teaches in the Creative Writing program at Columbia College Chicago and at Truman College, where she works with immigrants as a community educator. She will be a guest faculty member at Naropa University in the summer of 2013.

Andra Rotaru was born on 5th January, 1980, in Bucharest. She has a BA in Sociology at The University of Psychology and Educational Sciences (2003). Currently settled in Bucharest, she is an active cultural jurnalist for AgentiadeCarte.ro (since 2010), CEO at OPERA SCRISA.RO – Writers’ Copyright Association (since July 2012) and has several collaborations with the main cultural newspapers and magazines in Romania (interviews and reportages with contemporary Romanian writers). Iulia Militaru (b. 1978, Bucharest) has a B.S. in Medicine and a B.A. in Literature from the University of Bucharest, where she earned an M.A. in Literary Theory in 2006 and is currently pursuing a PhD in Romanian Literature. After a few children’s books and her study Metaphoric, Metonimic: A Typology of Poetry, her first poetry collection came out in 2010, Marea Pipeadă (The Great Pipe Epic), receving two major awards at the “Young Writers Gala”. Her last poetry collection, dramadoll (Casa de Editură Max Blecher, 2012) co-authored with Anca Bucur, and designs by Cristina Florentina Budar, is part of wider inter-art-and-author (poetry/graphic art/video/sound) project.

 

Iulia Militaru s-a născut în 1978, la Bucureşti. A studiat medicina, la Universitatea de

Medicină şi Farmacie „Carol Davila”, din Bucureşti, apoi limba şi literatura română la Facultatea de Litere, din cadrul Universităţii din Bucureşti. Şi-a obţinut diploma de masterat în Teoria Literaturii, în anul 2006, iar acum este doctorand în literatură română.

A publicat mai multe cărţi pentru copii şi o carte teoretică despre poezie, Metaforic şi metonimic: o tipologie a poeziei. În 2010, i-a apărut primul volum de poezie: „Marea Pipeadă”, pentru care a primit premiile: „Tânărul poet al anului 2010” şi „Tânărul scriitor al anului 2010”, în cadrul „Galei Tinerilor Scriitori”. În 2012, împreună cu Anca Bucur (poezie) şi Cristina Budar (grafică), a lansat volumul „dramadoll”, la Casa de Editură Max Blecher. Cartea face parte dintr-un proiect mai amplu, fiind rezultatul colaborării celor trei, în vederea realizării unui dialog între diferite stiluri, arte (poezie, grafică, video, sunet) şi autori.

 

Chris Tanasescu (MARGENTO) is present as a poet, professor, performer, and

translator in universities, theaters, public squares, and lounges in the United States, Vietnam, Thailand, Romania, and France (among his most recent destinations). In June 2013 he is presenting a „graph poem” performance, together with his poetry, music, and action painting band, at the E-POETRY world conference organized by Kingston University in London.

Chris Tanasescu (MARGENTO) e prezent ca poet, profesor, performer şi traducător în universităţi, teatre, pieţe publice şi baruri din Statele Unite, Vietnam, Thailanda, România şi Franţa (printre cele mai recente destinaţii). În iunie 2013, va prezenta împreună cu trupa sa de poezie, muzică şi pictură/video, un „graph poem” performance la conferinţa mondială E-POETRY (de poezie electronică/digitală) de la Universitatea Kingston din Londra.

Caius Dobrescu – born 1966, at a still young age, around 15, became part of the Romanian underground literary scene inspired by the free experimental spirit of the counterculture of the Sixties. As a poet, he should be a disappointment for the Western mind in search of ethnic-exotic thrills. Together with Andrei Bodiu, Marius Oprea, Simona Popescu, Sorin Matei, Marius Daniel Popescu, he was part of the so-called Braşov group, developed in the eraly 80s around the influential poet and cultural critic Alexandru Musina, which had no taste for exploring the deep roots of the native Romanian spirit. On the contrary, such an archaic etno mystique, rather encouraged by the national-communist cultural policies of the local dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu, was felt as totally false and revulsive. In his earlier poetry, Dobrescu explored the ,,rythms and blueses‘‘ of everyday language, simultaneously paying attention to the moral conundrums of life under the ,,real existing socialism‘‘. His work was published only after the fall of the Communist regime (Efebia/Efeby, 1994, Spălîndu-mi ciorapii/Washing my socks, 1994, Deadevă/‘ndeed, 1998). In a later phase, he tried to mingle poetry with the theoretical reflection on social change, emerging order and the

complex functioning of our adaptive mind (Odă liberei întreprinderi/Ode to the free enterprise, 2009 – the German version of this volume received the Prise for European Poetry of the city of Münster, Germany, in 2009).

 

Caius Dobrescu s-a născut în anul 1966. La o vârstă încă fragedă, a devenit parte a scenei literare româneşti de underground, inspirat de libertatea de spirit şi

experimentalismul contraculturii anilor ’60. Ca poet, reprezintă mai degrabă o dezamăgire pentru gândirea occidentală, aflată în căutarea emoţiilor etnico-exotice. Împreună cu Andrei Bodiu, Marius Oprea, Simona Popescu, Sorin Matei, Marius Daniel Popescu, a făcut parte din aşa-numitul grup de la Braşov, apărut la începutul anilor ’80, în jurul influentului poet şi critic cultural Alexandru Muşina, care nu agrea căutările originilor spiritualităţii autentic-româneşti. Dimpotrivă, o astfel de mistică etno-arhaică, mai degrabă încurajată de politicilie culturale naţional-comuniste ale dictatorului Nicolae Ceauşescu, era simţită ca total inautentică şi revulsivă. În primele sale încercări poetice, Dobrescu a explorat „ritmurile şi sonorităţile” limbajului de zi cu zi, acordând atenţie, în acelaşi timp, enigmelor dimensiunii morale a vieţii în conformitate cu „adevărata faţă a

În etapa următoare de creaţie, Dobrescu a încercat să combine poezia cu reflecţia teoretică asupra schimbărilor sociale, cât şi asupra modului complex de funcţionare a mecanismelor adaptative ale gândirii noastre. (Odă liberei întreprinderi/Ode to the free enterprise, 2009 – versiunea în limba germane a acestui volum a primit distincţia:”Prise for European Poetry of the city of Münster”, Germania, în anul 2009).

Gene Tanta was born in Timisoara, Romania and lived there until 1984, when his family immigrated to the United States. Since completing his M.F.A. and Ph.D., Tanta has completed two poetry books and begun editing two hybrid anthologies of poetics and poetry. His poems and translations may be found in journals such as: Ploughshares, EPOCH, Columbia Poetry Review, Circumference Magazine, and The Laurel Review. His research inspects the border between ethics and aesthetics in the work of postcommunist Romanian and first-generation American poets. Currently, he is living in Bucharest as a Fulbright Scholar.

Gene Tanta s-a născut în Timişoara, România, şi a locuit aici până în 1984, când familia lui a imigrat în Statele Unite. De atunci, finalizându-şi studiile de master şi doctorat, a scris două cărţi de poezie, a început să editeze două antologii şi să publice poezii şi traduceri în reviste precum: Ploughshares, EPOCH, Columbia Poetry Review, Circumference Magazine şi The Laurel Review. Cercetările sale abordează problema graniţei atent supravegheate dintre etic şi estetic în opera poeţilor români din perioada pstcomunistă şi a primei generaţii de poeţi americani. În present, locuieşte în Bucureşti a bursier Fulbright.
